GOYA HOT NEWS
All Saints GOYA held a kickoff gathering for the year on Sunday, October 15, 2006.

Of course, food was involved...
Fr. Frank gave a small presentation to the group on the image we portray by the way we are dressed. He came to the meeting in a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey, blue jeans and tennis shoes, and asked the youth if that changed the way they saw him as their priest. Fortunately, all the participants gave the correct answer... which might have been different had he worn a Cleveland Browns jersey instead..
Other business discussed was when to hold meetings, plans for upcoming events including Metropolis GOYA retreats, Basketball and Volleyball tournaments, and other youth events.
GOYA meetings will generally be held on Sunday afternoons (3:00 to 5:00 p.m.) as this seems to be the best time to get together for both youth and parents.
On Sunday, October 1, GOYA advisors from both Weirton and Steubenville parishes attended the Metropolis GOYA Basketball Seminar at Holy Cross Church in Mt. Lebanon, PA. Rules and guidelines were reviewed for the 2006-2007 GOYA Basketball season, along with the passing out of registration packets for each team.
This year, again, joint teams including All Saints parish, Weirton; Holy Trinity parish, Steubenville; and St. John's parish, Wheeling, will be fielded.
Representatives from all three parishes met after church on Sunday, October 29, at All Saints in Weirton, to make sure all the players and participants had forms, and to disburse candy bars for a fundraiser to help defer tournament expenses for the teams (hotel rooms, etc.).
Besides discussing Basketball tournaments, the Goyans indicated they would like to participate in the Metropolis Volleyball Tournament in the spring. Watch this site for future event dates.
On Tuesday, November 7, the Weirton GOYA went shopping for Operation Christmas Child - a movement to collect "shoe box" items as gifts for needy children throughout the world. Being Election Day, the youth did not have school, so they gathered at WalMart to shop for personal items, pencils & paper, non-perishable munchies, and other items that could fit in a shoe box (or plastic case as it were). The boxes will be collected at a central location in Weirton later in the month, to eventually be shipped out to needy locations throughout the world.
The youth, their advisors, and Fr. Frank enjoyed lunch together at Subway Restaurant following the shopping trip. The nice thing about eating lunch in a restaurant located within WalMart is that your choice of dessert is only limited by how many isles you want to walk through before picking up something yummie. The snack color of choice was "RED", texture was "chewy", and flavors were "cherry" and "strawberry". To find out what the snacks were, you will have to ask one of the youth that participated...
